Classes

Classes are a major part of club activities and are open to all club members. They provide a social environment where members can learn new arts from more experienced members and volunteer teachers. In addition to the regular weekly classes, special workshops are held on occasions to teach advanced or new skills.

Cabochon Cutting

A cabochon is a stone which has been cut with a dome on top. This style of cut is used for opaque and patterned stones such as agate, opal, petrified wood, malachite, rhodonite etc. The result is a smooth highly polished gemstone for use in jewellery or as an ornament.

Students are able to use club equipment during classes and once they have mastered the art, can utilise the equipment outside classes during workshop hours. There is no upfront tooling cost associated with these classes.

Stages of cabochon cutting:

Faceting

Imagine starting with a rough stone and turning it into a sparkling gemstone! Faceting is a style of cut used with transparent gemstones such as sapphire, ruby, amethyst, emerald, etc and is designed to bring out the full natural brilliance of the gem.

Equipment is available at the club for use during classes so there is no expensive upfront tooling costs. The list of equipment required for lessons is provided in the first class.

Jewellery Making

This class teaches you to make jewellery in either silver or gold. Gemstones that you have cut yourself could also be incorporated into your design for a ring, pendant, bracelet, or brooch. Students learn at their own pace in a social environment. There is a list of equipment and materials required for jewellery making which can be obtained from your teacher.

Carving

Carving is the forming of rocks into 3-dimensional or relief shapes. The easiest material to carve is talc or soapstone and only requires some wood working tools and fine sandpaper. Harder materials require electric tools

Enamelling

Enamel is the melting of coloured ground glass onto a metal back. Create items such as jewellery, enamel beads or bowls. The patterns and designs are only limited by your imagination.

Copper Shim

Copper Shim is the age old art of  working of copper sheets to make pictures in relief.
